We are The Clare Association Chicago
In the year 1965, Aer Lingus made it’s first flight from Dublin to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport.
Aboard the flight were many notables from Ireland, including Dermot Honan Senator who was a Fianna Fáil politician from Ennis Co. Clare who served as a senator for 8 years.
During a reception held for the entire group, Senator Honan invited the Clare people who were on his flight to his hospitality room. The group pictured below were in attendance.
Senator Honan was interested in knowing how The Clare Association was progressing in Chicago - sadly we had to inform him that there was no Clare Association. Just then the seed was planted then and there! Soon after, a meeting was held at the Ridge Chateau. The beginning of The County Claremen’s Association of Chicago was born.
Original attendees of Senator Honan’s reception was Mike McInerney (Cranny), Mike Malone (Ennis), Mike Keane (Labasheeda), Frank Lynch (Lisdeen), Pat Mulqueen (Kilrush), P.J. O’Dea (Kilrush), Pat Roache (Quirrin), and Mike Roache (Ballynacally).

Our community was born from the shared experience of Irish immigrants seeking connection, belonging, and a sense of home in Chicago. That spirit of togetherness continues to guide us today. We gather not only to celebrate our County Clare heritage, but to strengthen the bonds that hold us together across generations. Through fellowship, shared traditions, and collective purpose, we create a welcoming place where every member feels seen, supported, and part of something larger than themselves.
Compassion
Compassion has been at the heart of our organization since its earliest days. What began as neighbors helping neighbors has grown into a longstanding commitment to uplifting those facing hardship. From supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to offering scholarships that open doors for young people, we strive to embody the generosity and kindness that define our Irish roots. Our compassion is not just a value — it is an action, lived out through service, charity, and care for those who need it most.
